Let’s take a moment to talk about Pioneer.
It’s true that they typically place low in World Class. It’s true that many people like to give them a hard time about their scores or seemingly endless Irish-themed programming.
You know what I think?
I LOVE Pioneer.  Pioneer represents everything good about the drum corps activity.  They actively seek out people who would otherwise not get the opportunity to be a part of a world class drum corps - woodwind players, kids from foreign countries, you name it - and they bring them in, teach them how drum corps works, and give them a summer of personal growth and a great time.  Pioneer is a corps that has found its niche.  It’s not doing flashy visuals with chairs, poles, or stick houses.  It’s not killing people while playing classical music at quadruple forte.  It’s not playing jazz.  All those things are great and exciting, and I love seeing them, but I think Pioneer does something greater than that.  Pioneer is the true spirit of this activity.  A lot of drum corps have mission statements that include phrases like “teaching youth to become better people”.  Pioneer embodies that idea, and that is why I love them and will always enthusiastically support their efforts, no matter what they score.
If all the people who got cut from top 12 corps went and marched with Pioneer, imagine how great the corps could become.
